The Unthinkable

Most people who go to Belize end up on Caye Caulker. So it was with my new friend Erik the antipodean Viking, and two lovely Danish girls that we hitched a ride from Tikal in Guatemala to Belize City and the boat out to the Cayes.
Luckily for me, my lot was firmly thrown in with Anna, one of the girls. Erik had a problem in that he had yet to work his magic on Mia who was Anna’s best friend and a JDub to boot, which made for interesting times. Mia had a problem because she didn’t know how she felt about Erik, and Anna had a problem because she was going to have to tell Mia that she was going to be sharing a room with me. And me? Not a care in the world. I was on my way to paradise with a beautiful girl, and ahead of me I could see nothing but good times. And for once I was right.
With the accommodation sorted, we relaxed into our first week. We went snorkeling and swam with sharks and huge rays; we enjoyed fine Caribbean-style dining; we made firm friends with two Oregonian lads of fantastic temperament; and every evening we convened on the dock and had sundowners. It was almost too good to be true.
Anna and I were in full holiday romance mode, but Mia and Erik were having problems seeing if a fling was on the cards. They were sharing the room next to me and Anna, but no love was being had.
Erik talked to me about it when we had a moment together. He told me he honestly had no idea if Mia was either into him, or up for it in general, and even if he was that keen on her. I was keen for everyone to be as happy as I was, but had no good advice.
Things came to a head a day or two later. When Anna told me what had happened we laughed long and hard together. Mia was evidently in a similar state as Erik, not knowing where she stood or whether or not anything might happen. Time was running out, and one can only imagine the tension between them at bedtime.
Mia decided to take matters into her own hands. Erik was down on the dock drinking with me when Mia crossed the line and did the unthinkable. Yes, that’s right she rummaged through Erik’s rucksack in search of his diary. Keeping an eye on the shutters in case anyone came, Mia opened Erik’s diary at his last entry. She read, “I took a peek in Mia’s diary but it’s all in Danish.”
They never did get it together.
